The Albany Academies e-newsletter Week of January 18
Due to the short school week, we are providing an abbreviated version of our weekly electronic newsletter. We wanted to highlight some exciting announcements this past week, important news and special events occurring this weekend.
New academic structure announced
As announced earlier in the week, there has been a change in the administrative structure of The Albany Academies. Wendy Muhlfelder '67 has been appointed to the position of Associate Head of School of Albany Academy for Girls and Scott Milliken as Associate Head of School of The Albany Academy.
Ms. Muhlfelder has been a valued member of the Academies faculty since 1989 in the Lower, Middle & Upper Schools, and served as AAG Dean of Students for the past two years. Mr. Milliken has been a dedicated member of the Academies for more than 10 years and served as Upper School Director for the past three years. They have both been selected for their long history, dedication and excellent records of service with the Academies.
Ms. Muhlfelder and Mr. Milliken will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of each campus.
Join us for hockey festivities this weekend!

Please join us this Saturday, January 23 for a special ceremony before the start of the AA Varsity Hockey Game at 4 p.m. to honor Frank O'Brien III '84 (pictured at left).
The Albany Academy Alumni Association will be retiring Frank's jersey and hanging it in the Robison Family Hockey Arena -- the first hockey jersey to be retired in Academy history.
Frank was a three-sport athlete at The Albany Academy and member of the 1983 New York State Section II championship hockey team. | After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1988, he fulfilled a lifelong dream and played professional hockey in the United States and Sweden. He tragically passed away in December 2006 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Members of the O'Brien family will be present for the ceremony -- along with Head of School Dr. Douglas North -- and announce a special gift to the hockey program. After the event, we hope that you will stay for the AA Varsity Hockey game vs. Pomfret.
Due to this event, we are changing the time of the AA Junior Varsity & Varsity Basketball games scheduled for Saturday, January 23 to 4 p.m. (Junior Varsity) and 5:30 p.m. (Varsity).

It was a huge week in athletics for two standout student-athletes at the Academies. WNYT NewsChannel 13 was on campus this past Thursday to interview Amanda Cioffi '10 of the AAG Varsity Basketball Team.

The AAG Varsity Basketball Team will travel to Cobleskill today for a game at 6 p.m.

Just a few spots remaining for Drivers Ed course
There are a very limited number of spots remaining for our new Drivers Education program that we will be offering this spring through Bell's Auto Driving School.
This non-credit course will include 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of road instruction. Students must have a valid New York State Learner's Permit or license prior to taking the program and must be 16 years old by February 1. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be issued an MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion.
The program begins with an orientation on February 4 and the course (both classroom work and driving) will run from February 6 through approximately June 12. The cost will be $425 for Academies students and $450 for non-Academies students; a minimum of 16 students is required to conduct the program.
If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Director of Operations Pam MacAffer at (518) 429-2439 or macafferp@albanyacademies.org. We will be offering the Drivers Ed course as part of Summer Camp 2010 as well.
Student volunteers needed for Radiothon
Faculty member Bob Neudel is seeking 6th grade boys to lend their support to the Ronald McDonald Radiothon on Saturday, January 30 at Crossgates Mall.
Five to six volunteers are still needed from 9:30-10 a.m. to help set up the event. Any students who enjoy yo-yoing can be part of "The Albany Academies Yo-Yoers." Students will be performing exciting yo-yo tricks from 10 a.m.-noon as well as teaching and working with many of the Ronald McDonald children! Our students will also be encouraged throughout the day to assist with a variety of jobs, including selling hearts.
If your son is interested or you would like to serve as a parent chaperone, please contact Mr. Neudel at neudelb@albanyacademies.org; students should wear their Academy Leadership t-shirt to the Radiothon.
